Pageant winner: beauty inside is what matters on the outside
In a groundbreaking attempt to shatter differences and create harmonious intercultural understanding, a young Muslim woman has successfully competed in the Miss Big Wide World pageant. Defying expectations, Miss Habiba El Majnooneh, 23, became the first Muslim woman to take the crown, winning over a multi-ethnic judging panel.
“I’m really excited,” El Majnooneh confessed at a post-pageant press conference. “I’m really happy that I can break down barriers and show the beauty of my culture and religion through this competition.”
The young winner topped the swimsuit and evening gown categories, and admits that her revealing outfits would do much to address misconceptions about Muslim women.
“My religion has the greatest respect for women. We look beyond the surface as Muslims in order to value the beauty within, so I’m really happy that I can show this as a beauty queen.”
Judges also commended the young contestant for her astute observations on world events, particularly those in Africa.
“The birth of Brad and Angelina’s baby is significant on many levels,” El Majnooneh says.
El Majnooneh plans to use her newfound fame to bring awareness to global issues and to bridge the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims.
“I have lots of ideas, including a photo shoot for some glossy men’s mags that will definitely open some doors. I think too many people have incorrect ideas about Muslims, so I’ll do what I can, especially as a lot of prejudiced people read magazines.”
El Majnooneh was surprised by the special consideration afforded her by pageant organisers, who ensured that El Majnooneh had a place to offer her daily prayers in between segments, and have confirmed that El Majnooneh’s schedule will take into consideration important Islamic events, such as the holy month of Ramadan.
“Habiba has explained what her restrictions are, and we are happy to limit some of her engagements to the hours after sunset while she is fasting,” a statement from the Miss Big Wide World organisation read.
El Majnooneh competed against 79 other women from around the world and her reign as Miss Big Wide World has already begun. She flies to Iraq tomorrow to begin peace negotiations, following a strut on the catwalk for a charity benefit.
